Introduction.
Cigarette smoking plays an important role in pathogenesis and development in chronic disorders of the airways (e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). These diseases progress slowly before first symptoms appear and even very often are not treated seriously by the patient. Many patients are exposed to tobacco smoke at home and/or at work. Considering the fact that Poland is still the European leader in smoking, the problem of this illness will be increasing in this country.
Aim. The aim of the study was to show if passive smokers who breathe smoke at home suffer from chronic disorders of the airways.
Design. In this study 90 families were examined. One member of each family smoked more than 10 years and 10 cigarettes per day. The questionnaire was based on the latest strategies concerning the diagnosis of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). These subjects were not only asked to answer the questions in the questionnaire but were examined as well. They were X-rayed, had spirometry and blood cell count determination. Result. The study showed that 48% passive smokers suffered from mild COPD.
Conclusion:
1.The fact of passive smoking should be marked in the history of case patient.
2.If there is a smoker in a family, others numbers of this family should be given medical care by a family doctor and other specialists in the same manner as the smoker (regular X-ray and spirometry).
