Family physicians have a vital role to play in comprehensive efforts to prevent youth violence. The American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Academy of Paediatrics have all put forth policies encouraging physician attention to this pressing public health concern. Roles for family physicians include: screening for exposure and risk; making referrals to supportive services; counselling for parents and children on ways to reduce risk for violence and promote healthy psychosocial development in a child's home and community; and advocating for supportive social policy. This poster session will provide an overview of some of the health professional training activities currently underway in the US including work being conducted by the Southern California Centre for Youth Violence Prevention, one of 10 Academic Centres of Excellence funded by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and charged with developing training for health professionals in the area of youth violence prevention.
