OBJECTIVE: To identify ways in which Family Doctors can improve the quality of care they offer to patients with mental illness by including their families in the process.
METHODS: A Medline literature search was conducted and relevant articles were reviewed and information synthesized.
RESULTS: There is good evidence in the literature to support the involvement of families in the care of their relatives with mental illness. When adequate guidance and support is given, this can reduce relapse rates for patients and reduce family burden. Practical suggestions are presented on how to work with patients and their families in mental illness. Challenges relating to patient confidentiality are also addressed.
CONCLUSIONS: Family physicians have an important role to play in the involvement and support of families in the care of mentally ill relatives.
