Introduction:
Many measures to educate the public to more tumor free life-style and cancer screening practice have been widely adopted. Considering the costs of educational programs and diagnostic procedures, a health intervention monitoring policy is required to determine their impact on the community and to define the future anticancer strategies. Purpose of the study: To set up a computerized data-base able to assist medical personnel in health intervention monitoring policies and in making policy decisions at community level with a focus on European Countries.
Materials and methods:
a 3 component relational Data-Base was developed as a Microsoft Access 2000® application and was subsequently tested in a multicentre Hellenic trial by medical personnel without computer-experience (3000 medical records were registered and analysed). The resulting system (SESy-Europe) is a standardized data-base able to work in 7 languages either in a compact (German, Spanish, French) or in extended form (English, Italian, Greek and Rumen) facilitating data comparison between different European Institutions. It recognizes more than 2500 pre-codified items (1519 different symptoms and diseases, 149 professions, 31 health insurances, medical history, age, sex, family history, educational level, knowledge about cancer screening and prevention, etc) and evaluates the current practice related to 18 possible screening tests (mammography, clinical breast examination, Papanicolaou smears, sigmoidoscopy, SOBT, PSA etc). Both the intermittent net-working in semi-enterprise form and the use of Jet-Engine for peripheral units allow low cost for net-connections and distribution.
Conclusion:
“SESy-EUROPE” facilitates cancer screening programs monitoring policies to be implemented and compared among European countries in a standardized, easy and economic way.
