Abstract No. 1184 (Free Standing Paper) : PREVALENCE OF DIABETES MELLITUS IN PRACTICE IN CENTRAL RURAL PUNJAB (PAKISTAN)

Diabetes Mellitus is a common disease of modern age and developing societies. A lot of work and studies are available in advanced countries but in Pakistan, National figures on its prevalence in practice are certainly lacking specifically about rural areas.
Objective: The aim of this work is to assess the prevalence of this disease particularly in rural areas of Punjab, Pakistan based on health information system usually established in family health clinics or general private practitioners.
Material & Methods:
The diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus was based on reviewing all medical records at three different private clinics in two districts, Kasur and Okara during a period of one year from 01-06-1995 to 31-05-1996. The total number of patients reviewed were 65,000 and this is the record of the first visit to respective clinics, subsequent and follow-up visits are not included.
Criteria of Diagnosis:
1. Fasting blood sugar: over 140 mg/100 ml in two or more times 2. Fasting urine sugar: Traces to 1 or 2% in two or more times at least. 3. Also based on notes and documents of diagnosis by other doctors if above two criteria were not met.
Results: 1. It was found that 1430 patients had D.M. out of 65,000, 2.2% of the total number of the patients
