Item 14 - EJGPAdvBoard_proposal_2014June

Description:

PROPOSAL FOR A ‘GROUP OF EDITORIAL ADVISORS’ FOR THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GENERAL PRACTICE (EJGP)

The publication of the first impact factor for the EJGP in 2012 resulted in an increased flow of submissions. WONCA Europe, its network organisations and other organisations active in the field of family medicine and primary care, regularly contribute to our ‘News’ section. In 2013, we have started collaboration on double publications with European non-English journals of family medicine. Currently, we are discussing the optimal mode of (free/open) online access to the journal.

The journal is published as an online journal, with pre-publication of each accepted paper (‘early online’) immediately after approval of the final proofs and final publication in four issues per year. As from 2014, the issues will not be printed anymore, but at the end of each year a printed Yearbook will be published. The EJGP website will become increasingly important as interactive medium between authors, editors, users (readers), publisher (Informa Healthcare) and owner (Wonca Europe) of the journal.

Given these developments and our ambition to continue to grow the quality of the journal and to expand awareness of the EJGP among individual professionals and organisations active in the field of family medicine and primary care, we would like to establish a ‘Group of Editorial Advisors’ for the EJGP. We need colleagues who are committed to the aims of the journal and can give us solicited and unsolicited advice.

We have listed our ideas on the tasks of an ‘EJGP Editorial Advisor’ as follows:

Task/attitude

Description

Be Committed

Be committed to the aims of the EJGP

Provide solicited and unsolicited feedback

Inform the Editorial Board on developments within (European) primary care and family medicine (topics, organisations, policy)

Inform the Editorial Office on relevant events regarding primary care and family medicine

Promote the EJGP

Network for the journal among colleges, academic departments, primary care organisations, etc.

Raise awareness/promote the journal among potential readers (colleagues, students)

Raise awareness/promote the journal among prestigious authors

Raise awareness/promote the journal among potential subscribers (organisations, individuals)

Advise on Strategy

Share opinions on the general strategy of the journal

Advise on how to improve the impact (factor) of the journal

Advise on Content

Advise on the journal's general profile

Advise on specific (future) areas of content

Advise on (future) article types

Advise on topics for (future) occasional Series

Advise on Supplements

Support the Editorial Process

Advise on the general editorial policy of the EJGP

Advise on names of reviewers

Occasionally review or advise on submitted papers

Be an Author

Occasionally write (invited) guest-editorials or commentaries

We do NOT plan to organize regular formal meetings in person with our Editorial Advisors (i.e. there will be NO ‘Board’ of editorial advisors). However, I may organize an informal meeting of Editorial Board and Editorial Advisors during WONCA Europe Conferences: those present are invited to attend and share their opinions with us. The first occasion for such a meeting would be the 2015 conference (in Istanbul).

My agreement with Wonca Europe reads as follows: “The Editor in Chief and associate editors propose persons for the advisory board taking into account a well balanced board. Wonca Europe and the Publisher will decide on the persons proposed.”

It seemed natural to invite

·         representatives from various organisations with which we already established a collaboration (WONCA Europe, WE Networks, WE SI groups, WONCA News, other European journals of family medicine, EFPC, …  ), and

·         other experts from Europe and other continents.

We have listed the names of persons we think might be good candidates, including the 12 Editors of national journals of GP/FM we collaborate with.

REQUEST:

We propose that the Wonca Europe Executive Board and the Publisher (Hakan Parup, Informa Healthcare) examine this list and tell us whether they can agree (or not) with the persons proposed. In addition, you may want to suggest names yourself. You also could indicate your preference for a certain person (e.g.  if there is more than one candidate from an organisation or a country). With regard to representatives from Wonca Europe and its Network organisations, Wonca Europe could suggest names or could leave the invitation procedure to us.

We will invite all approved candidates. Colleagues who accept our invitation will be listed on the EJGP’s website. If an Editorial Advisor does not have online access to the EJGP already, Informa Healthcare will provide him/her with login details.

We hope that during the upcoming Lisbon Conference, the list of persons to be invited for the function of ‘Editorial Advisor’ for the EJGP can be completed. Our goal is to publish the names of the final ‘Group of Editorial Advisors’ in issue IV (2014) or issue I (2015).

Thank you for your collaboration.

Kind regards,

Jelle Stoffers,

Editor-in-Chief,

the European Journal of General Practice.

(Maastricht, 4th of June 2014)
