Aim: According to the WONCA's Definition of European GP/FM 2002, general practitioners/family physicians exercise their professional role by promoting health and preventing diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of prophylaxis and health promotion provided by public and non-public primary health centres (PH Cs) as well as individual family practices in the Lower Silesia Region in Poland.
Design & Methods: The survey was carried out between September 2006 and March 2008 amongst randomly chosen public and non-public PHCs as well as individual family practices of the Lower Silesia Region: in the city of Wroclaw, cities of more than 100,000 inhabitants, towns of less than 100,000 inhabitants, and villages.
Results: PHCs in cities of more than 100,000 inhabitants (59.6%) and family practices (61.3%) most often reported carrying out educational projects about principles of healthy lifestyle. The highest percentage of PHCs from villages (47.3%) and family practices (46.7%) reported informing patients of opportunities for prophylactic tests (e.g. to diagnose heart diseases or COPD). PHCs also organised prophylactic programmes for diabetes (37.5%), ischaemic heart disease and hyperlipidaemia (20.8%), arterial hypertension (12.5%), as well as regular meetings for patients on: cardiovascular diseases (33.3%), ischaemic heart disease (12.5%), diabetes (20.8%), hyperlipidaemia and lifestyle (4.2%).
Conclusions: Considering our results, an increasing emphasis put on health promotion and disease prevention provided by PHCs seems to be purposeful. Data from literature point to patients' awareness of this utility and their growing interest in health promotion and disease prophylaxis that can influence a level of patient satisfaction.
