Interest Quality improvement focuses on changing human behaviour patterns (clinical pratice and protocols) based on experimental adaptations to current practice. As in other areas of evidence based medicine, using strong evidence to show how and why a particular intervention worked is important to be able to decide how to improve individual clinical issues. However, sharing experience that is gained is also an important step in building knowledge in this area, reporting the consequences of a series of small-scale tests and allowing others to reflect on the process of assessment, goal setting and implementation.
Learning Goals - Understand the importance of validated methods to perform quality improvement cycles - Identify tools to carry out quality improvement cycles - Practice designing relevant study protocols - Identify methods to report on quality improvement cycles
Methods 10 minutes - Assessment of current knowledge and identification of possible areas requiring improvement (brainstorming) 10 minutes - Basic structure of a quality improvement cycle, based on SQUIRE guidelines (multimedia presentation) 10 minutes - Presentation of a practical example “Quality improvement cycle to improve informed consent in family planning procedures” (multimedia presentation) 30 minutes – Participants are divided into small groups and work on a case study, designing an improvement protocol (practical group work) 15 minutes – Brief presentation by each group of protocol designs 10 minutes – How to construct a quality improvement cycle report (multimedia presentation) 5 minutes – Questions and answers Expected impact At the end of the session participants should feel better equipped to perform a quality improvement cycle in primary health care and share the results in a validated report.
