Doctor Health and Well-being Group

The aim of this SIG will be to Support GP/Family Doctor (FD) Health & Well-being.

What is the rationale for a SIG for GP/FD Health & Well-being?

  • Doctors’ health and well-being is a crucial part of workforce capacity for
  • Coming to work to deliver patient care
  • Delivering quality care (quality = safe, timely, effective, efficient, person-centered care)
  • Improving patient safety and minimising medical errors, diagnostic delay and misdiagnosis
  • Wise use of healthcare resources
  • Prevention activities
  • Innovation and improvements in patient care
  • Research for continuous improvement of care

Supporting the health and healthcare of GP/FDs contributes to the retention of the GP workforce.

The GP workforce is a precious resource in the healthcare system.

A healthy supported GP workforce is likely to be the best way to recruit new GPs into the profession

How can this proposed SIG achieve this?

A SIG for supporting Doctors Health and Well-being will ask MOs, Networks, SIGs and the WP to share information on activities and resources for the benefit of all GPs / Family Doctors in the WONCA Europe region. This shared resource will help improve GP/FD supports in each country on:

  • Preventing and Managing Burnout
  • Stress management and building resilience
  • Career development, planning and mentoring
  • Strategies for Work-Life Balance and Managing Clinical and Administrative workloads
  • Encouraging Self-Care, and empowering healthy health behaviours and outcomes
  • Preventing and managing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression
  • Promoting “a GP for every GP” in the WONCA Europe Region
  • Peer support for GPs; inclusivity, diversity and equity for GPs
  • Raise awareness of interventions for substance misuse
  • Interventions for doctors in crisis when there is a risk to their health or patient care.
