A Joint Collaboration Between the WONCA Europe Lifestyle Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG) & The British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM)
Background & Rationale
Traditionally managed as a chronic and progressive disease, Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is undergoing a paradigm shift. Recent international consensus by the ADA and EASD formally recognizes diabetes remission—defined as HbA1c < 6.5% for at least three months without glucose-lowering medication—as an achievable clinical goal.
Evidence from landmark trials like DIRECT demonstrates that structured lifestyle interventions targeting weight reduction, nutrition, physical activity, and sleep can induce remission in a significant percentage of patients. This webinar aims to translate this evidence into scalable, high-yield strategies that family physicians can realistically implement within the constraints of routine primary care consultations.
Learning Objectives
- Define & Classify: Understand the clinical criteria for T2D remission.
- Evidence-Based Practice: Review the physiological drivers of remission through Lifestyle Medicine.
- Patient Selection: Identify "high-responder" phenotypes most likely to benefit from remission-focused protocols.
- Practical Implementation: Apply time-efficient tools, including physical activity prescriptions and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
- Synergy: Position Lifestyle Medicine as a potent, disease-modifying approach alongside traditional pharmacotherapy.
