WHO Course: Professional Updates on Managing Common Infections in Primary Care - A Focus on Antimicrobial Stewardship

Professional Updates on Managing Common Infections in Primary Care: A Focus on Antimicrobial Stewardship

The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe is organising a focused six-day online crash course on antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) for primary care clinicians, taking place between 26 May and 5 June 2026. Designed primarily for clinically active physicians in the WHO European Region, the course will provide practical tools, expert guidance, and real-world strategies to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship activities in outpatient settings and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use without compromising patient care.

Sessions will cover core AMS principles, evidence-based antibiotic prescribing for common adult and paediatric infections, stewardship approaches for STIs, TB and HIV, safe prescribing during pregnancy and breastfeeding, diagnostic stewardship, and patient communication strategies. The programme features internationally recognised experts from WHO Collaborating Centres, Stanford University, public health agencies, and leading hospitals, with a strong focus on practical implementation in daily primary care practice. Activities will be conducted online in English from 16:00–18:00 CEST and will include expert presentations, case discussions, and interactive Q&A opportunities.

As 80–90% of antibiotics are prescribed in primary care, this course aims to equip clinicians with the confidence and skills needed to make smarter prescribing decisions and contribute to the global response against antimicrobial resistance. Registration is now open, and spaces are limited.
