A Major Step Toward Strengthening Primary Care in Türkiye: Updated Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines

Türkiye has undertaken a significant step toward reinforcing its primary care system through the comprehensive revision of the Primary Care Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines. Developed collaboratively by the Ministry of Health and the Turkish Association of Family Physicians (TAHUD), this initiative highlights the importance of developing nationally contextualized clinical guidelines tailored to country-specific healthcare dynamics, while representing a substantial advancement in the standardization and modernization of primary care delivery.

Last updated in 2012, the guideline has undergone a comprehensive revision following a 14-year interval.  The revision process was initiated in February 2025 with a joint workshop held in Ankara City, bringing together academic leaders in family medicine, and was subsequently completed in a structured and systematic manner. The guideline was officially published on March 14, 2026.

A Modern Framework for Exellence

The guideline is structured in accordance with the core competencies defined by WONCA, ensuring it meet inernational standarts  of family medicine. The content is organized into three principal sections:

• Approach to Symptoms and Clinical Findings

• Approach to Diseases

• Preventive Care, Immunization, and Special Conditions

Precision at the Point of Care

Within these sections, clinical topics are systematically addressed within the terms of diagnostic evaluation, differential diagnosis, evidence-based management. The inclusion of clinical algorithms and tabulated data enhances decision support, facilitating efficient and standardized clinical practice.

Furthermore, the guideline is planned for full integration into the Family Medicine Information System. This digital health transformation allows physicians to manage clinical complexity with real-time updates and streamlined access to validated resources.

A Global Milestone

This milestone not only strengthens primary care services in Türkiye but also contributes to global efforts to enhance the role of family medicine in the development of resilient, equitable, and sustainable health systems.
