Awareness and perceptions of social prescribing to address social determinants of health in rural and underserved areas among healthcare students in European universities
Social prescribing has emerged as a promising approach to addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH), particularly in rural, remote, and underserved communities where traditional healthcare services may be limited and loneliness common.
There is limited evidence of how healthcare students across European universities perceive the concept of SDOH and potential value of social prescribing. These future healthcare professionals will play a key role in shaping and delivering integrated care models.
At our initial meeting on the research topic we discussed:
-Proposed research approaches included: (1) a scoping review of the literature; and (2) primary research such as a survey and/or focus groups assessing knowledge, skills, and awareness of social prescribing.
-Target population was initially framed as undergraduate medical students; however, the group discussed also including trainees/young doctors (e.g., vocational training), depending on feasibility and relevance.
-Focus groups were considered feasible online (Zoom), with AI-assisted transcription/analysis potentially reducing the workload; language was flagged as a practical challenge for multinational groups.
-Possible recruitment channels discussed: the European Young Family Doctors Movement (EYFDM), English-taught medical programmes across Europe, and/or local-language focus groups with translation of outputs.
We would try to gain funding for the project.
Suggested commitment by members to the project are negotiable.
Who exactly should apply: 5 - GPs, GP trainees and healthcare students preferable with an interest in social medicine and general practice (applies to healthcare students) and in research with potential capacity to design/set out methodology, put together a funding application, execute the project and for data analysis) preferably from various countries in Europe.
The expected level of involvement - 2-3 hours a week but would vary during the project
The anticipated timeline- 1-2 years
Interested individuals should express get in contact- Dr Özden Gökdemir gokdemirozden@gmail.com
