WE at the 33rd European Congress of Psychiatry, 5-8/04/2025 in Madrid. “Towards Real-World Solutions in Mental Health” #EPA2025

The conference entitled: “Towards Real-World Solutions in Mental Health” was held from 5-8 April 2025 in Madrid (Spain) and  featured the proactive presence of  WONCA Europe (WE).

Ferdinando Petrazzuoli, WE member-at-large was involved at the European Psychiatric Association (EPA)-Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Network (GAMIAN)- European Federation of Associations of Families of People with Mental Illness (EUFAMI)- WONCA joint symposium named Patients, Families, Primary Care and Mental Health Professionals-Towards Collaborative Care Models.

The presentations of this symposium highlighted the importance of involving patients and their families in a proactive way to address this increasingly emerging condition since mental health has become by now a public health issue. Collaboration between primary and secondary care providers has also proved to be essential.

Dr. Petrazzuoli illustrated the results of some surveys carried out in the WONCA Europe families showing that the COVID-19 pandemic had a catastrophic effect of the primary care workforce producing high levels of burnout. Unfortunately, despite the end of the pandemic, recent international surveys have shown that this condition is not doing any better. Apparently, the growing burden of administrative tasks is one of the stressors which is more related to early burnout in the primary care workforce.

The joint workshop conclusions highlighted the importance of  future scientific collaboration between WONCA Europe and the EuropeanPsychiatric Association .
