WONCA Europe fully agrees and endorses WONCA World Statement on the Protection of Health Personnel in Areas of Conflict 12/2024”

The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) unequivocally calls for the protection of all health personnel working in areas of conflict. Healthcare personnel, by virtue of their commitment to saving lives and alleviating suffering, must be safeguarded against any harm, intimidation, or interference.

Attacks on health personnel, facilities, and patients are blatant violations of international humanitarian law and the principles of medical neutrality. Such actions not only threaten the lives of those directly involved but also undermine access to essential care for entire communities, exacerbating human suffering. During the years 2022–2024, there were the highest number of incidents of attacks on healthcare personnel.

WONCA urges governments, international bodies, and local authorities to:

  1. Ensure the Safety of Health Personnel: Establish and enforce protocols that protect healthcare personnel and facilities, particularly in conflict zones.
  2. Respect Medical Neutrality: Uphold the sanctity of healthcare as a nonpartisan and non-combatant activity.
  3. Strengthen Support Systems: Provide resources and psychosocial support to health personnel who risk their lives to serve communities in crisis.

Protecting healthcare personnel is not optional; it is a moral and legal obligation that transcends borders, politics, and conflicts. WONCA stands in solidarity with health personnel everywhere, particularly those operating in the most challenging and dangerous environments.

Together, let us champion the safety and dignity of those who dedicate their lives to the health and well-being of others.
