WE at the Emirates Family Medicine Society's 7th Congress

Dr Mehmet Ungan, immediate past president of WONCA Europe (WE), was invited by Dr. Wadeia Sharief, President of the Emirates Family Medicine Society, to speak during the opening session of the Congress in Dubai.

The scientific and clinical standard of the congress was high. Clinical and theoretical sessions were led by Dr. Mohammed Farghaly, the Scientific Committee Chairperson. Our colleagues were gracious hosts and effectively organised the entire program.

The congress showcased an exclusive scientific partnership between Emirates FM Society and international scientific partners such as the Royal Australian College of GPs, the American Board of Family Medicine, the Canadian College of Family Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the UK Royal College of GPs. This partnership aims to foster long-term collaboration.

Around 1,500 physicians and healthcare professionals gathered to advance the field of family medicine, emphasising continuous development of knowledge, skills, and practice, as well as fostering connections through the society's activities. Physicians in the region have access to quality continuing medical education, expertise, and skills to provide comprehensive healthcare.

Some countries in the region are looking at Turkey as a model for primary healthcare services. Dr Ungan introduced the WE Working Party on Policy & Advocacy and invited our Emirates colleagues to contribute by following WE Working Party on Policy & Advocacy activities and newsletters. This dissemination strategy aims to share WE Working Party on Policy & Advocacy work widely and draw support from experiences in other regions for global benefit.  His messages were warmly received, with active contributions from Saudi and UAE colleagues, many of whom are well-trained in Family Medicine in the UK, USA, and Canada. Governmental organisations from various countries were also represented, and our colleagues expressed eagerness to register for the WE Working Party on Policy & Advocacy newsletter and engage in discussions.
