The Perio & Family Doctors campaign, led by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the European Regional Branch of the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA Europe), unites dental health professionals and family doctors to enhance patient care. Sponsored by Curasept, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between oral and general healthcare, recognizing the pivotal role of teamwork in elevating treatment standards for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory ailments. In 2022, EFP and WONCA Europe experts published a scientific consensus report emphasizing the need for closer collaboration between family physicians and oral health providers to tackle systemic health conditions like hypertension, obesity, smoking, and hyperlipidaemia. The campaign includes visually accessible materials such as infographics, emphasizing the scientific evidence linking periodontal disease, particularly periodontitis, to conditions like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. The collaborative effort seeks to inform family doctors about the impact of gum diseases on overall health and raise awareness among oral health professionals about the significance of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their associated risk factors, ultimately promoting comprehensive care and healthier lifestyles.
